Law Reform materials from overseas
There have been a number of recent reports published in relation to reforming privacy law. This resource page can list only a few of them. Of most interest is the major review of privacy that has recently been undertaken by the Australian Law Reform Commission. Also of interest are the law reform commission projects in Victoria, New South Wales and Hong Kong.
Australia (federal)
In 2006 the Australian Law Reform Commission commenced a major inquiry into privacy law in Australia. A series of detailed publications and reports have become available in 2007 and 2008.
The ALRC has produced earlier reports on privacy which can be downloaded from the website. One specialist recent report is ALRC96 which concerns the protection of human genetic information.
Australia (states)
The New South Wales Law Reform Commission commenced a privacy review in 2006. A particular focus of the NSWLRC has been the tort of privacy. View other relevant reports.
The Victoria Law Reform Commission has recently completed a workplace privacy project and has now reported on the second stage of its privacy review: Surveillance in Public Places.
Hong Kong
The Hong Kong Law Reform Commission has undertaken a series of privacy projects from 1996 through to 2006. These have touched upon civil liability for invasion of privacy, data protection, interception communications, stalking, media intrusion and most recently covert surveillance.
