Privacy Awareness Week 29 April - 5 May 2012

What's on in PAW?

PRIVACY FORUM

Our Privacy Forum "Think Big? Privacy in the age of big data" was held on 2 May at the Intercontinental, Grey Street, Wellington. View the pdf of the final programme.

It's been two years since our last Forum, and the privacy landscape is changing, and getting more challenging all the time. For example the forum covered topics such as:

  • managing privacy in the arena of cloud computing
  • online tracking
  • marketing and privacy enhancing technologies
  • practical tools for privacy protection
  • news media and new media
  • surveillance in public places
  • codes of practice
  • regional shared healthcare
  • the proposed new government information sharing framework
  • what does it mean to be a privacy officer
  • updates on the latest cases, and complaint settlements

We had an exciting range of speakers, both local and international. In particular we're delighted that John Borking, Malcolm Crompton, Charles Raab and Bruce Schneier all spoke at our conference as well as at the Identity Conference (details below).

It's also great to see so many businesses and industry organisations involved in the forum this year, to share their experiences about what works (and doesn't work) for them.

DURING PAW

  • Launch of the UMR public opinion survey results: the Privacy Commissioner released the latest UMR public opinion survey results at the start of the forum.  Questions in the survey include general concerns about privacy, social networking and attitudes to government and business use of personal information.
  • A focus group of primary teachers to discuss what information and resources about privacy are needed in primary schools.  We are organising this in partnership with Netsafe and we are also delighted to have UNESCO's support.

MAKE PAW WORK FOR YOU!

We're not the only ones who organise events in Privacy Awareness Week. Businesses and organisations are increasingly using it as an opportunity to upskill staff, enhance their work, raise awareness and highlight their privacy successes.

For example, businesses sometimes:

  • run quizzes or do seminars for staff
  • put up posters around the office to raise awareness
  • host an event in their town, perhaps with a visiting speaker
  • support or promote an event organised or hosted by another agency
  • highlight their own privacy successes by putting out guidance information or doing a media release

Let us know what you'd like to do, and if we can help you celebrate!  This is our new poster: "Take the time to know your privacy principles" which highlights the information privacy principles and is a ready reference guide.  Order posters to put up in your offices.

IDENTITY CONFERENCE

The Identity Conference "Managing Digital Identity in a Networked World" was on 30 April and 1 May at Te Papa Tongarewa. It was jointly organised by Victoria University of Wellington, the Department of Internal Affairs, and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.

The Identity Conference highlighted the latest trends, perspectives, solutions and experiences in identity management. Several exceptional international speakers included:

  • Dr John Borking, former Netherlands Privacy Commissioner, who has particular expertise in privacy enhancing technologies
  • Malcolm Crompton, former Australian Privacy Commissioner, now international privacy consultant
  • Professor Charles Raab, University of Edinburgh, who has written extensively on privacy and was an adviser to the House of Lords Select Committee on the Surveillance Society
  • Bruce Schneier, online security specialist extraordinaire

WHAT IS PRIVACY AWARENESS WEEK?

Privacy Awareness Week is an annual event organised across Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand and the United States by the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (APPA).  See www.privacyawarenessweek.org for all our regional events and activities.

As well as events in their individual jurisdictions, APPA members also organise a joint activity every year. Last year, we conducted a social networking survey across the region (View the results). This year we are producing a one-stop list of resources that are available across our region to help children and young people (and their parents and teachers) to protect their privacy. Keep an eye on the Privacy Awareness Week website for more information!
