What does the Privacy Commissioner do?

The Privacy Commissioner has broad powers to enquire into any matter if she believes that the privacy of the individual is being, or is likely to be, infringed.

The Commissioner’s responsibilities include:

  • investigating complaints
  • monitoring proposed legislation
  • considering and commenting on government policy
  • making statements on privacy issues
  • issuing codes of practice
  • reviewing authorised data matching programmes
  • promoting understanding of privacy principles.
