Privacy Week 8-12 May 2017

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner marks Privacy Week each year to promote privacy awareness and to inform people of their rights under the Privacy Act. It is also to help educate businesses, organisations and agencies of their responsibilities and obligations with personal information.

Privacy Week is done in conjunction with Privacy Awareness Week which is held by the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (APPA) network. Here's where you can find out more about APPA and Privacy Awareness Week.

This year, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner marked Privacy Week from 8 – 12 May.  The theme this year was "Trust and Transparency".

Trust and transparency

Why is 'Trust and Transparency' this year's Privacy Week theme?

Trust is an important expectation when you deal with an agency whether it is a business or a government organisation. Trust goes together with transparency. For this reason, transparency is vital to building and maintaining trust. 

For example, your bank has to be able to reassure you that your information is accurate, up-to-date and securely stored. If your bank cannot give you this peace of mind, you won’t be able to trust it. To help you trust it, your bank has to be transparent about what information it has about you and allow you to access that information while protecting it from being disclosed to others. 

By letting people know what personal information is collected, how it is used and stored, an organisation has to provide a level of transparency to build trust between it and you, whether you are a client, customer or a member of the public. And there are other aspects of transparency. These include giving you access information that is about you and a way of correcting that information, if you think it is not accurate or simply wrong.

All of these are important rights when it comes to your personal information and they are set out as information privacy principles in the New Zealand Privacy Act. Find out more about the Privacy Act and its information privacy principles here.
