Can a news camera crew record me without my permission?
The Privacy Act doesn’t apply to the collection and reporting of news and current affairs, so we aren’t able to consider complaints about the actions of news camera crews.
In the first instance, we would suggest you get in touch with the production company responsible for filming you or the TV station on which the recording was shown, and see if you can resolve your concerns directly. However, if that doesn’t work, there are other bodies which can investigate the actions of news media agencies.
If the recording was shown or broadcast on television or radio broadcasting, you can complain to the Broadcasting Standards Authority(external link). If the recording was only made available online, you should contact the New Zealand Media Council(external link).(external link)
