“Protect yourself from scammers,” says Privacy Commissioner.

“Think before you give out personal information, and ask what it will be used for,” says Privacy Commissioner Marie Shroff. “This is our number one privacy tip.”

In supporting the Commerce Commission and Ministry of Consumer Affairs during this year’s Fraud Awareness Week, Mrs Shroff emphasises that people need to be careful about who they give their personal details to.

“Increased use of technology, such as the internet and email, means scammers can target millions of consumers very easily. People need to know what organisation or individual they are giving their details to, and what the information is being used for.”

Many of the scams originate overseas, which makes it difficult for New Zealand law to prevent the damage they do. This is why it is vital for New Zealanders to know how to protect themselves.

Mrs Shroff says, “Individuals are the best at being able to protect their own privacy. You need to be aware of the risks and how to avoid them. You need to know your rights, and ask questions when you aren’t sure or think that your privacy has been jeopardised. If in any doubt, don’t respond.”
