We are pleased to announce the appointment of Joy Liddicoat as our Assistant Commissioner (Policy and Operations). This is a new position that will lead our investigations, policy and technology, and data sharing functions.

Joy was a Human Rights Commissioner from 2002 to 2010, having previously worked for 16 years as a lawyer in public, private and community sectors, specialising in public law.

Since leaving the Commission, in addition to maintaining her legal practice, she has been working with the Association for Progressive Communications, a global network of civil society groups advocating for affordable access to a free and open internet and other aspects of technology-related human rights issues. In this role Joy has been engaged in the United Nations work on the right to privacy in the digital age. She is Vice President of Internet NZ, and was Chair of the Domain Name Commission from 2010 to 2014.

In 2010, Joy completed an LLM with a dissertation on alternative disputes resolution. She has practical experience of ADR in diverse settings and in her capacity as Human Rights Commissioner.

Joy joins us on 20 January 2015.
