The Privacy Good Research Fund is now open for applications for privacy-related research.

The Privacy Good Research Fund (PGRF) is a joint research programme made available by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, with funding contributions from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (iappANZ) Legacy Fund, and the Social Investment Agency (SIA). The PGRF welcomes the promotional support of the Government Chief Privacy Officer (GCPO).

The PGRF will distribute up to $75,000 in total to successful applicants, with maximum funding available for each project of up to $25,000. Applications close at 5pm on 9 September 2019. Successful applicants will receive funding to conduct privacy-related research, and public education or awareness raising initiatives.

Applications are welcome for research projects that develop new privacy-related knowledge, provide practical solutions, or promote innovation. The PGRF also welcomes research that will support organisational experiences in improving practice in data privacy and ethics, using the SIA’s Data Protection and Use Policy (DPUP) as the implementation example. The SIA has a dedicated portion of funding to apply to this area.

Applications from individuals, students and community groups are welcome, as well as the wider research community of academic researchers, industry bodies, consumer and advocacy organisations and for-profit organisations.

The PGRF aims to:

  • capitalise on existing privacy research capacity in academic and non-profit sectors;
  • to encourage the development of innovative solutions which enhance the protection of personal information;
  • generate new knowledge and support the development of expertise in selected areas of privacy and data protection;
  • increase awareness and understanding among individuals and organisations across New Zealand of their privacy rights and obligations; and
  • promote the uptake and application of research results by relevant stakeholders.

Information about the PGRF, including an applicant guide, application form and FAQs, is available on the Office of the Privacy Commissioner’s website at www.privacy.org.nz or by emailing researchprogramme@privacy.org.nz.
