Your rights

We have a broad range of powers which we can use in order to promote and protect individual privacy. If you become aware of practices at an agency, which you think may be breaching the Privacy Act, you are welcome to tell us about it.

It may not always be appropriate or possible for us to formally investigate your concerns − for instance, if there is no real evidence that the agency is breaching the Privacy Act or if the issues do not warrant formal action by our Office.

However, there are some options we can consider, such as making a general enquiry with the agency, or even considering undertaking a Commissioner initiated inquiry if the matter is serious.

If you want to report serious wrongdoing in your own workplace,  and your concerns are a protected disclosure, we will comply with our obligations under the Protected Disclosures (Protection of Whistleblowers) Act in dealing with the issue and any request you may have for anonymity.

For further information, please call our enquiries line (0800 803 909) so we can discuss your options with you.

Full details of our policy and approach can be downloaded here.
